Graveside sermon:

Ec 3:11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
Ec 3:12 I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.
Ec 3:13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
Ec 3:14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
Ec 3:15 That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

God does indeed make everything beautiful in his time. That is sometimes what makes it hard. It is his time; not ours, not James'. No man can understand the way God works, his timing, his reasons, and for this reason, it is better that a man does good and rejoices in this life. He should be able to eat and drink and enjoy the good works of his labor; it is the gift of God. This gift does not require belief. It is something we have regardless of our standing with God.
When God does something, it is forever, nothing can be added to it or subtracted from it, but God does these things so that men should fear, some might say worship now, because in the day this was written they did not have a complete understanding of worship.
That which was is now, and that which is to be has already been, and God seeks that which is past. That can be hard to wrap our minds around. Maybe it is part of the mystery of Life. Since we cannot understand it, we should do those things we can do, and trust that God has made things beautiful in his time.

Joh 11:21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
Joh 11:22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
Joh 11:23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
Joh 11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Joh 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

I lost my brother, too. Just like Martha, I have questions. Like Martha, I am grieving, and it would be very easy to say, "If you had just been here, my brother would not have died." But the God that said "From the dust you were made and to the dust you will return" is the God that also said "I am the resurrection and the life. He that believes in me shall never die."
Jesus was with James, and while I will not get my brother raised like Lazarus, what happened to Lazarus will happen to James at some point.

1co 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
1co 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
1co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
1co 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
1co 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
1co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
1co 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

Death is God's enemy, and yet James is dead, but we that believe in biblical Christianity must believe that death is not permanent. He will be raised from the dead.

1th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
1th 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

James is dead. Asleep. But we are told to comfort one another with these words. Jesus will come and James will rise. Some of us here today will probably rise with James, too.
We can take comfort in this. The earthly shell is all that remains. The soul has returned to his Maker.

Job 1:21 says, "Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return: the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.
That is very hard to say now with our grief. Many of us still have questions. We cannot find the answers. Many of us still need to forgive James for old wrongs, but I would ask for you to lay it down. Let James go in peace.
God is good. He has everything in his control. He makes everything beautiful in his time.
